Warrior Hockey

The mission of the Alaska Warriors Hockey Team:

"A team of Veterans who can depend upon each other for support both on and off the ice." All Veterans with any level of disability or injury are invited to join us, regardless of experience within the sport of hockey."

We need your help in getting the word out to Veterans with disabiliteis that there is a program just for them, where the can be themselves and find a community of Veterans to be at home with. "Alaska has the highest percentage of veterans per capita in the United States. According to the US Census Bureau in 2015, there were 39,375 veterans residing within a 50 mile radius of Anchorage (Municipality of Anchorage & Matanuska-Susitna Valley). According to DisabilityStatistics.org, in 2014, the percentage of working-age civilian veterans with a VA determined Service-Connected Disability was 25.9 percent across Alaska. This extrapolates to 10,197 veterans within a 50 mile radius who would be eligible to participate in a Warrior Hockey program."

The Alaska Warriors Hockey Team Story

Challenge Alaska was privileged to participate in the 2016 & 2017 USA Hockey Disabled Hockey Festivals, in the sled hockey adult division. While at these Festivals, the staff were exposed to all divisions within the Disabled Hockey section, including Warrior Hockey. This led to a discussion about how Challenge Alaska could expand its program services to potentially include Warrior Hockey. In early 2017 USA Hockey announced a grant opportunity that would be awarded to 5 organizations to expand Warrior Hockey to new areas across the US, expanding the number of teams from 5 to 10. Challenge Alaska made the decision to apply for this grant and began to lay the groundwork to start a team.

In April 2017 Challenge Alaska was notified that it was selected as a recipient of the USA Hockey grant to start a Warriors Hockey program. With a great deal o

f excitement plans were made and the foundations were laid. Several Veterans with disabilities who are also hockey players, were brought into the planning for the team and agreed to act as liaisons to recruit eligible Veterans with disabilities and help with funds development to support the team. Over the next several months a few "try it" dates were held to get Veterans on the ice as well a few social events to bring eligible Veterans together and to begin the development of a team.

The team formally began weekly skates in October of 2017 and continues to expand and grow.

About the Sport

Warrior Hockey is dedicated to US Military Veterans who have served our country and are injured or disabled. As one of USA Hockey's Disabled Hockey Section's newest disciplines, the Warrior Hockey Discipline is growing across the country and we are excited to see it grow here in Alaska. This program is open to any Veteran of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard) who have at least a 10% disability rating regardless of if you have played hockey before.
