About the Sport

The goal of Special Hockey is to give people with physical and developmental disabilities the chance to play the sport of ice hockey in an environment which is adapted to their level of ability. The athletes play upright, there is NO CHECKING, and in most cases offside, icing, penalties etc. are not part of game play. Special Hockey emphasizes players to have fun through teamwork, social interaction, and improving their quality of life. Special Hockey serves a wide range of disabilities and there is opportunity for everyone to enjoy the sport!

The team is made up of men and women (teens through adults) of all levels of experience. We train on the basics of skating, puck handling, shooting, and scrimmaging weekly (during the season).

The Alaska Avalanche Special Hockey Team is the only special hockey program in the state of Alaska currently.

Teams are abundant in Canada and the lower 48 and are often the beneficiaries of local foundations and/or professional teams. Currently our team has no such support and relies on the donations of local businesses and individuals. We continue to seek sponsors to support our team and assist with the high cost of training and equipment.  Please contact Brandon Harker at (907) 344-7254 if you are interested in becoming a sponsor of this amazing sport
