Introduction to Paralympic Sport K-12

Welcome!

This is the home of Paralympic sports for Alaskan youth with physical / visual disabilities, grades K-12.  It's your opportunity to learn all about Paralympic sport in the best way - by doing it. Each month (during the school year) we will feature one sport that you can come and try. Many of these sports are offered either through your school or thorough one of Challenge Alaska's Paralympic Sport Club on a seasonal or ongoing basis. Sports featured are designed for people with disabilities such as:

  • Spina bifida
  • Visual impairment / blind
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Amputations / limb discrepancies
  • Hip / joint limitations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Impaired range of motion
  • Short stature
  • Impaired muscle power
  • Hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis
  • and others

Many of these sports use adaptive equipment as a tool to allows your child to compete with their peers and others with disabilities on a level playing field. Depending on the sport, the adaptive equipment used varies and may or may not include a wheelchair. What you use for mobility in everyday life often has little to do with what you use to play sport. At the end of the day we want for your child to be engaged in sport as just another athlete.

Another benefit to parents is that you can spend time visiting with other parents of kids with disabilities while watching your child play the sport of the month. It's a chance to connect and learn from each other, compare notes and support each other. We also mix adults with physical / visual disabilities into the sports we offer to provide role models for your child. By seeing healthy, independent adults with physical / visual disabilities they learn that the possibilities for them are endless.

Monthly Sports: 2016-17 School Year

We welcome kids with physical / visual disabilities, their siblings and friends to join us for this introductory program. The emphasis is on learning about the wide variety of opportunities that are available to kids with physical / visual disabilities. While we cannot offer every sport that's available within the Paralympic movement, we welcome your suggestions for planning future school years.

Please note that all participants must have a current info form and liability waiver (signed by parent/legal guardian) on file with Challenge Alaska's Anchorage office prior to participating.
