Adaptive Dog Mushing

The Sled Dog Sanctuary has opened its doors to work with Challenge Alaska clients with physical and visual disabilities. For those hearty few who are up to the challenge, we will trek up to the Sanctuary 1 Saturday every three weeks to spend a day with the dogs.

The Sled Dog Sanctuary has spent the last few winters upgrading their yard to increase accessibility as well as adding a warming tent. Even more exciting is that they have worked with a former Challenge Alaska intern to develop a truly adaptive dog sled that allows the individual to drive the team.  It incorporates a Nordic sit ski chair attached to the frame of the dog sled to allow a musher to sit inside the sled. With time, practice and through the use of verbal commands and a braking system that can be operated from the seat, you can drive the team with one of the Sanctuary’s staff supporting you from the back runners on the sled. With enough practice and demonstration of necessary skills, you can run the team independently with a second team and musher following behind.

For those who are able to stand and balance on the runners, you’ll learn to the traditional way to run a team.

In addition to running the dog teams, you’ll learn about sled design, some history of dog mushing and its role in helping shape Alaska, how to work with and line out the dogs, and much more. You’ll have a good amount of time to interact with and get to know the dogs and their unique personalities.  There is always something to do and something to learn at the Sled Dog Sanctuary.

The groups will be small and due to limited parking at the Sanctuary, participants will need to ride out in the Challenge Alaska van. Each person will need to bring their own lunch, snacks and beverages to get them through the day. There is a $30 fee per participant per session or $100 for all four. Spaces are limited….

We will leave Anchorage at 8:45 am and return around 5:30 pm. The goal is to be at the Sanctuary from 10:15 am - 4:00 pm.
