Anchorage Youth Development Academy

The Youth Development Academy is for people who work directly with youth (ages 12-18.) This is an intensive 38 hour training spanning 4 months, based on the highly researched methods from theCenter for Youth Program Quality: a partnership between the Forum for Youth Investment andHigh/Scope Educational Research Foundation. It will consist of an initial three-day training session beginning on Feb 22, 2012, four follow-up & coaching sessions, with a final wrap-up session on April 19, 2012. Supervisor Breakfast Kick-off

Supervisors will be informed of the agenda, materials, and expectation of their participant’s execution of an action plan/project, with the support of the participant’s agency and supervisor.
3-Day Intensive

The Academy will include the following elements:
1) High/Scope youth development approach to working with youth
2) Introduction to the Pyramid of Program Quality
3) Adult-youth interaction strategies (e.g. method trainings, see below)
4) Adolescent development: transitions in development, developmental needs, and developmental theory
5) Strategies for developing Social and Emotional Learning Skills

Four – 3-hour follow-up training sessions with content based on the following youth development method trainings:
· Voice and Choice - Scaffolding for Success
· Planning and Reflection - Ask -- Listen -- Encourage
· Active Listening - Reframing Conflict
· Building Community - Structure and Clear Limits
· Cooperative Learning

Final Day- Reflection & Presentations

May 4, 2012

9 AM- 5 PM

Discussions and follow up to trainee’s efforts to implement the methods introduced throughout the academy. Trainees will also present what they have worked on. Additional topics will include evaluation and strategy/methods determined based on participant needs.
Trainees who attend all the sessions and complete activities will receive
· A binder complete with workbooks for each of the training topics covered
· A certificate for 38 hours of training
