22nd Annual “COURAGE IN SPORTS” to air on CBS Sports on Sunday, November 13

CHICAGO – The 22nd annual “Courage in Sports,” a one-hour special recognizing individuals who have overcome monumental challenges to achieve greatness in the world of sports, will air on CBS Sports on Sunday, Nov. 13 (5:00 PM, ET) (Times may vary depending on local NFL game schedules).  Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Ed Asner,Courage in Sports has honored sports legends such as Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, Arthur Ashe, Kerri Strug, Walter Payton and Cal Ripken Jr. Click here for a “Courage in Sports” trailer.


The 2011 Courage in Sports honorees include:

§ Gainesville State School Football – A group of convicted felons ages 13-19 taste freedom for a day by competing against a local area high school.

§ Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham – An extreme sports junkie who created a wheelchair-version of skateboarding (extreme sitting) due to physical limitations, stemming from spina bifida.

§ Kevin Jordan and Tom Walter – A player and coach duo from the Wake Forest baseball team, who became inseparable after Walter donated one of his kidneys to save Jordan’s life.

§ Kortney Clemons – An incredible athlete who excels in track and field despite having lost a leg while serving his country in Iraq.


In addition to the four feature stories, the winner of the America’s Choice Honor for Courage in Sports (https://www.facebook.com/CourageInSports) will be highlighted in the show.  TheAmerica’s Choice Honor for Courage in Sports winner was determined through a six-week Facebook voting competition that tallied nearly one million votes.  The recipient will be announced on the CBS “Early Show” on Saturday, Nov. 12.  Finalists for the America’s Choice Honor include Rutgers’ Eric LeGrandAndrew, Paul, Colter & Willy Phillips - a group of talented young athletes who lost their father in a plane crash last year; Michigan State’s Arthur Ray Jr.; The Fennville (Mich.) High School Basketball Team; Luther College’s Chris Norton; and professional snowboarder Kevin Pearce.
