Challenge Alaska Skier Hannah Ahrens Passes Away

Hannah AhrensChallenge  Alaska Skier Hannah Christine Ahrens passed away June 24, 2011 after complications from Protein Losing Enteropathy after receiving a heart transplant May 4, 2011 at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, Palo Alto, California.

Hannah was born April 24, 1995 in Portland, Oregon, when she was diagnosed before birth with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

According to Hannah’s family, “Challenge Alaska gave her wings and a need for speed when she became too weak to ski by introducing her to the Sit-Ski, taking her to the top of Alyeska. Her huge smile seemed to be frozen on her face as she gave her ski instructors the signal for faster and faster. She loved spending weekends in Girdwood.

A celebration of Hannah will be held at St. John United Methodist Church July 21, 2011 at 4:00 pm. Bring memories and wear red, tie-dye or Hawaiian shirts. In lieu of flowers her family has requested contributions be made in Hannah’s name to Challenge Alaska on line at or mailed to 3350 Commercial Drive Suite 208, Anchorage, AK 99501. Funds will be used for a new Sit-Ski.
